A cultural hub in the heart of Old Cairo committed to the revival of the Traditional Arts of Egypt
The artistic and cultural heritage of the Gamaleya area in old medieval Cairo is under great threat of being lost due to market forces spurred on by capitalization and mass production. Many crafts and techniques have already been lost.
El Gamaleya helps preserve these skilled trades and crafts (in copper, leather, silver, and others) by transforming two ancient heritage buildings into hubs for both the fair trade production of and training in, the ancient Islamic arts.
We believe that preserving cultural heritage is a national duty and not just an artistic one. Once implicit and unrecorded knowledge is lost, it becomes near impossible to gain back - as witnessed in the fallout of modern globalized industrialization. Folk culture and art are the building blocks of national identities and the visual language of communities - we hope that by helping these visual lexicons to survive and thrive, more Egyptians will be brought together in narrative solidarity.
